The magnificent two rock-cut Temples of Abu Simbel on the land of Nubia! This location was picked carefully by King Ramses for one good reason; it was the sacred site to Hathor prior to the existence of the temples.
Believed to be built during the 19th Dynasty of Pharaoh Ramses II, they are actually two individual Temples. The greater of them dedicated to the God Amun, Ptah, Re-Horakhty. The Temples are not actually built but rather carved out of living rocks standing for 98 feet & 115 feet. At the entrance you will find four seated colossi of Ramses; each of them is almost 66 feet high.
An amazing event takes place twice a year at that Temple where the sun extends its first rays right to the head of the King Ramses once during his birthday & the other on the coronation day.
